Vitamins and minerals are essential for normal metabolic functions including hematopoiesis. The members of Vitamin B-group are components of enzyme system that regulates various stages of carbohydrate, fat and protein metabolism, each of the components playing a specific biological role. Vitamin C is involved in tissue repair and collagen formation. Vitamin A plays an essential role in the function of retina and is essential for growh and differentiation of epithelial tissue. Vitamin E is an antioxidant which preserves essential cellular constituents. Vitamin D is supplemented for prevention and cure of nutritional and metabolic rickets and for treatment of hypoparathyroidism. Iron, copper, manganese and zinc serve as catalysts in enzyme systems which perform vital cellular functions. Potassium and calcium are essential for normal excitability of muscle tissue, specially cardiac muscle. Iodine is essential in the development and functioning of the thyroid gland and for formation of thyroxine hormone.
One tablet or capsule daily or as advised by the physician.
Supplemental vitamins and minerals should not be prescribed for patients with haemochromatosis or Wilson8s disease. Hypersensitivity to any of the active ingredients is a contraindication. Excessive doses of vitamin A and D can lead to hypervitaminosis. When multivitamin preparations are prescribed allowance must be made for vitamins from other sources. This is particularly important during the first trimester of pregnancy when large doses of Vitamin A may be teratogenic. Iron and Zinc chelate with tetracyclines and absorption of all three agents may be impaired.
Multivitamin preparation with ordinary doses of component are usually nontoxic.
Use in pregnancy: This is formulated specially for paediatric patients. However, vitamins present in this formulation are safe for pregnant women. Use in lactation: This is formulated specially for paediatric patients. However, vitamins present in this formulation are safe for nursing mothers.
It is possible to develop symptoms of taking excessive intake of vitamin D if the individual receives vitamin D fortified nutrients, such as, milk, infant formulas/foods in addition to this preparation. This preparation may be used in patients being treated for Parkinson8s disease with a Levodopa preparation which includes a dopa-decarboxylase inhibitor (e.g., Carbidopa, Benserazide). But precautions should be taken. Pyridoxine acts as an antagonist of Levodopa.
